Monotype prints are a unique one of kind print, often called “painterly prints” due to the spontaneous nature of this process. Enjoy the textures and soft values that only monotypes can create. During this workshop students will learn how to pull monotype prints using Akua liquid inks. Akua inks are non-toxic and clean up with rubbing alcohol. Working on a polycarbonate plate (matrix) we will manipulate the ink with a brayer and a variety of mark making tools and materials. This process will be explored first with only black ink and end with layers of colored inks. We will learn the basic monotype printing techniques: additive and subtractive mark-making, stencils, registration, offset and ghost prints. Chin collè- aka: collage prints- will also be introduced to give the process even more exciting options to explore. The printing process can be as experiential and open ended as you want or as controlled: using Chin collè and stencils. Your final compositions will be exciting prints reflecting your preferences in imagery. We’ll wrap up the workshop with time to view our prints and share our insights and discoveries made during this three-day printmaking adventure. Come learn, play and create with ink and a brayer!
CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED TO 6 STUDENTS
MATERIALS FEE: $25 Materials Fee paid to instructor on first day of workshop. All materials will be provided for this $25 fee.
Beth Kassay-Padilla earned her first degree in 1984 from Alfred University in New York, studying printmaking and painting. After moving to New Mexico in 1985, she completed a second degree in Education at the University of New Mexico, where she began her career as an art educator with Albuquerque Public Schools. Working in elementary classrooms and observing the playful, exploratory approach of younger students encouraged her to loosen control and engage more deeply with process-driven artmaking. Beginning in 2000, she took workshops at New Grounds Printshop in Albuquerque and was a member from 2008 to 2012. It was there that she developed a lasting connection to Akua inks and monotype printing. She continues to work with Akua inks in her studio in Cedar Crest, New Mexico. Since retiring in 2023, her love of art, teaching, and being immersed in nature has kept her fulfilled, inspired, and artfully busy. www.artspaceeast.com/
