In this 8-week course, students will take a deep dive into one of the most expressive and dynamic elements of the landscape: the sky. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and painting clouds, light, atmosphere, and the subtle transitions that give skies their emotional power. Through structured lessons and personal exploration, students will study key principles of landscape painting, including composition, color temperature, brushwork, paint application, edges, and focal points. You'll discover why the sky appears blue, what causes the warm hues of sunset, how shadows carry color, and how to convey depth through atmospheric perspective. You’ll explore a variety of cloud types and how their formation influences shape, value, and color. Lessons will also include strategies for avoiding muddy color, maximizing the vibrancy of your palette, and using harmonious color combinations to enhance visual impact. Painting techniques such as alla prima, layered approaches, realism, and impressionism will be introduced, with the flexibility to tailor your process to your artistic goals. The pace will allow ample time for in-class painting, with demonstrations by the instructor. Instruction will be encouraging, thoughtful, and adjusted to each student’s level of experience. This course is open to painters working in oils, acrylics, or watercolor. Come prepared to learn, to be challenged, and to create work you're proud of while enjoying the process every step of the way. Class size is limited to 12 students.
