This goes for an advanced artist or a brand new beginner, because I am all for happy students.
This class involves working with melted wax (encaustic) in the European style where you paint with hot tools not brushes. This is an economical method done with thin skins of wax. The wax colors are brilliant and flow gracefully when done on a gloss surface. Change to an absorbent surface and soft muted tones result. I pass on all the tricks I have learned over the last 6 years with wax. I love to experiment so there are many ways I have let this muse lead me. The phrase, “I wonder what would happen if?”, has been responsible for much of this experimentation. There is no right or wrong way to do this process and I encourage discovery. We will focus on small A6 size surfaces to learn how to get a feel for the iron. It is the best way to master this process.
The class will begin with abstracts and that leads to using the different patterns in realistic landscapes. Rolling hills, mountains, mesas will come with ease. Mono printing adds a new twist as does embedding tissue while leaving some tooth to allow another medium. Rubber stamps, patterns, and photographs, open another window of possibilities and it is easy to see how image transfers would work as well. For a Sumi look, we will paint with wax soaked tissue. The real benefit of doing this two day class will be the time each student will have with me on a one on one basis as well as the extra time you will have to explore on your own. For those who want to have use of the tools on the second day I will come in two hours earlier for anyone that would be interested.
