Class Description:

In this exciting eight week course you will learn to paint your favorite person or animal. You will also learn traditional age-old techniques about use of color, color compliments blending color, brush and stroke techniques and other painting skills.

It is recommended that you bring a picture or photograph of the animal you plan to paint, and that you paint in oil. However, if you wish to use other media, the class will accommodate.

At the end of this class, you will take home with you an 11x14 to 16;x20 animal portrait to proudly display in your home or office.

The class of 8 weeks would be focused on oil, but the student could also use charcoal, acrylic or pencil if that is their preference.

The expectations and outcomes of the portrait would be discussed with each student and personal considerations that would add to the success of the finished product. I would like all students to have a successful likeness of their chosen animal.

The course would cover the following:

Laying out the subject,

How to get the proper proportions using diagonal lines (if necessary),

The use of color and highlights,

How to paint fur, hair or feathers realistically,

Reviewing other artists who were successful with animal portraits,

What works and what doesn’t (I have examples of this to share),

The appropriate colors of background, and

Constructive critiques.
