Children's Class: Drawing and Painting (CL059)
Ongoing Class, Wednesdays, 8 week sessions 3:00–6:00pm
Tuition $160
Joan brings together the classical drawing principles of Lecoq De Boisbaudran, a French instructor of Degas, Whistler, Monet and Renoir. Through the use of 18th century English watercolor methods, an understanding of drawing, tonality, light and color is taught to children. This method enables the child to achieve a more life-like three dimensional quality in each painting, as a complete range of consistencies from thick and opaque to thin and transparent can be accomplished all in the wet paint, along with the retention of brushstrokes unique to each painter. These characteristics, among others, are present in the works of the Venetian and Flemish painters. Your child will follow in the great tradition of painting principles that have been handed down through generations of painters.

The schedule is as follows:
January 14: Composition from photographic reference; use of thumbnails and preliminary sketches; directing the viewer's eye through the composition with anlgles, lines, and shapes.
January 21: The importance of a value structure in painting; exploring notans, value sketches and value underpaintings
January 28: Color theory in the landscape; use of aerial perspective; correcting color flaws in photographic reference; underpainting to maximize strong color
February 4: Learn to see the separation of sunlight and shadow values in your subject. Underpaint with a simple system to create a strong road map of value and temperatures of sunlight and shadow.
February 11: Create dramatic contrast with a beginning on a dark surface
February 18: It's not easy painting green! We'll explore ways to create lively greens, how to create texture in foliage, and how to paint trees.
February 25: Learn to paint still water with reflections. Reflections are a fascinating subject, and pastel is a surprisingly effective medium with which to paint them. Learn the techniques of painting reflections, making water look deep, and much more.
March 3: In this session we will paint moving water, which is a much different subject than still water. Rippling streams, crashing waves and waterfalls all require specific treatment to make them lifelike.
March 10: Paint dramatic skies and clouds. When the sky is the subject, it can be hard to bring it down to the size of your surface. Learn to paint light-filled clouds, storm clouds, and much more.
March 17 : Rocks can be part of the landscape or the subject, but in either case it's important to make them solid, heavy and catch the characteristics of particular types of rocks. Specific techniques will help make you a "rock star!"
March 31 (no class March 24): Putting figures or architecture in the landscape. When you add a single element such as these to your landscape painting, it becomes the focal point. Learn how to pull it all together and make the painting work as a whole.
April 7: Paint the subject of your choice. At the end of the day, we will have a review of any work created in or outside of the twelve-week session.
Class size is limited for each session; please contact instructor before registering to be certain there is space in your selected classes.
