Wendy invites you to come revel in the world of light and color as we explore and demystify the basic principles of painting still-lifes in oil. This class is for anyone already familiar with oils who is wanting to deepen their understanding, wake up their seeing, and open up to the luscious joy of painting in oils. Wendy has been successfully painting for a living in Santa Fe for many years and is represented by Canyon Road Fine Art in Santa Fe. Please see her website at www.wendyhigginsfineart.com for more info and lots of images of her paintings. Please contact Wendy at 505 466-0336 for sign-up and further class information.

PAINTING KNIFE

PAPER TOWELS

PALETTE: Glass or plexiglass palette. Place cardboard or brown paper under the glass to provide a neutral background for mixing paints. Please no paper palettes. Alternate: Wooden palette treated with linseed oil. * Single edge razor blades make cleanup easy!

SURFACES: “Primed linen with a medium to fine tooth is a great surface for our purposes. Double primed is great, single primed is good and the texture may also be described as “portrait” for fine or “landscape” for medium tooth. ( I make my own panels gluing Claessens #13 (portrait linen) double primed to untempered masonite boards.) Listed below are two good sources for commercially made versions of these panels. Although any good panel/board or stretched and primed linen will be ok for class, I strongly advise you to avoid Fredrix canvas as it has high absorbency and will suck the oil out of your paints like the Sahara desert and make painting a short cut to torture. We all are inclined to try to save money and unfortunately especially when buying painting panels. I recommend that a few good panels from the below sources will be more than worth the money as they will make painting far easier and more pleasurable.

Two Sources for painting panels:

SourceTek Panels

www.CanvasPanels.com 800 587-5462

recommended: Premium Line—Claessens#13 Oil Primed Portrait Linen on Baltic Birch 1/8” or ¼” (*available in 5 packs of the same size)

Ray Mar Panels

www.raymarart.com

recommended: Plein Air Panels—Claessens#15 (Landscape linen—coarser than Portrait linen but fine for class) Single or Double primed

(available in 10 packs only) Perhaps you might want to find a few fellow painters and buy several packs of 2 or 3 different sizes

Tone your canvases for the class ahead of time. I use a wash of raw umber, turpentine, and liquin, brushed on and wiped off to give a light, neutral tone to start my paintings. Let them dry in a well ventilated room or garage.

I suggest you bring several boards to select from during our class. 9x12", 11x14", 12x16", 16x20" would be suitable sizes.

***Again---I emphasize the importance of learning to paint on the proper surfaces. The fewer obstacles we set up for ourselves the easier and more fun we will have painting. When a canvas does anything but let the paint sit on top of it until you move it around or blend it with more paint, it fights with your intentions and can cause endless frustration and confusion as to why the paint isn’t behaving the way you want it to. ***

EASELS, LIGHTS, TABLES AND STOOLS will be provided. A variety of still life ingredients will also be provided, but please bring some of you own favorite fabrics, vases, bowls, etc. and fruit, vegetables and flowers to add to your setups.

PLEASE BRING: Your sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and willingness to leap into the unknown.
